The tongue-twisting title of my PhD project is: Decentralisation and Local Governance of Land in Africa. Land Reform Implementation and Citizen Participation in Tanzania. Basically, I investigate how the Tanzanian land reform, which was passed by the Parliament in 1999 and came into force in 2001, is being implemented.
A lot has been said about the 1999 Tanzanian Land Acts and a lot has been written about the existing local customs governing land. My idea is to focus on the level in between. In other words, I investigate how the Tanzanian land laws affect local governance in practice.
